Photodynamic and Light-Response Nanomaterials Against Multidrug-Resistant Bacteria

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a life-threatening concern worldwide. To combat this issue, ongoing research is focused on advanced nanoparticle studies. The nanoparticles, with their unique quantum-size effects, shape characteristics, and tunable behavior, hold the potential to mitigate AMR. Light-responsive nanomaterials are particularly promising in addressing life-threatening antibacterial resistance, offering precise control at the atomic and molecular levels through light-induced reactive oxygen species. Furthermore, noninvasive light-responsive nanocomponents in photodynamic therapy can enhance drug effectiveness, shelf life, biocompatibility, and more. This chapter explores recent research on light-sensitive nanomaterials in the context of photodynamic therapy for antimicrobials to address the global health threat of AMR.
