Strawberry Ripeness Classification Using Fuzzy Logic Approach

In terms of value and volume of production, strawberry fruit is one of the most important fruits in our agricultural industry. Accurate ripeness classification of strawberry fruits during harvesting is vital to ensure that the strawberry is classified according to its ripeness. However, the current practice to classify strawberries in industries is done manually by a human. This method is inconsistent, inefficient, and labor-intensive since human error in visual inspection is affected by environmental, physical, and psychological conditions. Therefore, this paper presents the development of an automatic classification system for strawberry ripeness using fuzzy logic. The input of the strawberry image is converted to the red, green, and blue (RGB) code color from the TCS3200 color sensor. In the output of the RGB color code, there will become an input to the fuzzy system, which will categorize based on the level of strawberry ripeness. The result from the proposed fuzzy logic controller shows that the ripe, unripe, and half-ripe strawberries have been successfully classified with almost 95% accuracy. In the future, this automated system may be very helpful in the agriculture industry, especially in the strawberry industry.
