Development of Low-Cost Wearables for Fall Detection and Prevention to Enhance Geriatric Care

摘要

Falls are a major cause of injury, particularly among elderly individuals and those with mobility issues. Early and accurate detection of falls can lead to prompt medical attention and reduced morbidity. In recent years, various fall detection systems have been developed using a variety of sensing technologies, including accelerometers. This paper presents an overview of fall detection systems and the role of accelerometers in these systems. The design and implementation of a low-cost fall detection system using an accelerometer is described. The system is based on a wearable device that incorporates an accelerometer to detect falls and trigger an alarm or send an alert to a caregiver or medical professional. The system has been tested and validated through experiments, demonstrating its effectiveness in detecting falls with high accuracy. The results of this study show that a low-cost fall detection system based on an accelerometer can be a practical and effective solution for detecting falls and reducing the morbidity associated with falls. The system has the potential to make fall detection technology more accessible and affordable, helping to improve the safety and well-being of elderly individuals and those with mobility issues.
