This chapter will focus on how fintech has changed operating landscape and business model of traditional core banking services, in favor of disruptors. Recent years have seen an accelerated disruption of traditional financial intermediation and banking. Groundbreaking innovations and widespread adoption of technological changes have redefined the relationships and modus operandi of major stakeholders in lending and credit space. From a relationship first, credit super-mart model lending where banks are the balance-sheet lenders to technology first, focused, unbundled lending orchestrated by mathematical and machine learning algorithms—the overall lending and credit market has seen major overhauls. We have also seen the rise of niche Capital Market players, whose innovative structured products have transformed fintechs from a Balance Sheet based or a peer-to-peer lender to an “originate to sell lender” and everything in between. This chapter surveys MENA landscape for different types of fintech lending disruptors, analyzing their business model including revenue drivers, credit decisioning practices as well as funding behavior. Drawing from global experience, the chapter then draws an outline of future potential disruptions in the credit market of MENA region—with a special emphasis on opportunity, product structures, and investment strategy driving these innovations.
