This chapter discusses the use of financial technologies in African and Middle-East fragile contexts, exploring a number of successes in overcoming established barriers, and shedding light on challenges that require attention. FinTech have been a powerful lever for tackling the challenges posed by fragility and providing crucial support to hazards-affected individuals. By way of illustration, mobile payments have helped maintain access to basic necessities during COVID-19 lockdowns, various digital payment platforms have facilitated cash transfers to populations isolated due to conflict in different countries, and climate-smart financial and insurance services have become essential for identifying and mitigating climate risks. All these are just a few illustrations, underlining the significant economic and social impact FinTech are having in situations of fragility. The prevailing FinTech business model, which prioritizes achieving “unicorn” status or mobilizing maximum investment as a marker of success, often leaves little room for technology-enabled solutions designed specifically for situations of fragility. It attracts all the attention and obscures the need to also create the needed enabled environment for the development of FinTech, particularly in countries with limited capacity.
