Liposomes for the Management of Allergic Airway Diseases

To treat allergic airway illnesses, lipid-based vesicles called liposomes can be employed as drug delivery vehicles. Asthma, allergic rhinitis, and allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis are a few examples of these disorders. For treating allergic obstructive pulmonary illnesses, liposomes provided several benefits, including improved drug stability, prolonged drug release, targeted drug delivery inside the airways, etc. The application of liposomes in allergic airway illnesses has been investigated in a number of research. For the treatment of asthma, liposomal corticosteroids have been studied. These liposomes may reduce the necessary dose and lessen systemic side effects by enhancing the drug’s pulmonary deposition and anti-inflammatory effects. Liposomes that contain allergens or immunomodulatory substances have also been investigated as a potential immunotherapy strategy for allergic airway disorders. By promoting immunological tolerance and immune response modulation, these liposomes can lessen allergic inflammation and symptoms. Antibodies or ligands that precisely target receptors or cells involved in allergic airway inflammation can be attached to the surface of liposomes. This method of targeted drug delivery increases the concentration of the drug at the site of inflammation, lowering the dosage required and reducing systemic exposure. To treat allergic airway illnesses, liposomes have been used to deliver anti-inflammatory drugs like curcumin or resveratrol. These liposomal compositions deliver drugs precisely at the inflamed airways enabling localized anti-inflammatory benefits and possibly minimizing systemic side effects. In preclinical trials, these liposomal formulations showed anti-inflammatory efficacy and enhanced lung function. Liposomal formulations may improve the efficacy of already effective treatments and provide new options for the treatment of allergic airway disorders.
