Four Element MIMO Antenna with PLUS Shape Radiator Arrangement and Corporate Feed for WLAN and 5G Wideband Wireless Applications

In this article, a compact four-element broadband multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) antenna system with a focus on adequate isolation and wide-bandwidth. The MIMO antenna is designed and optimized to cover a broad frequency range from 2 to 12.27 GHz. The structure consists of four antenna elements positioned at 90° intervals from each other, mounted on a plus-shaped FR4 substrate. The resulting MIMO antenna system has dimensions of 48(W) × 52(L) × 1.6(h) mm3. Across all frequency bands, this MIMO antenna system maintains greater than −20 dB isolation. Moreover, it demonstrates an impressive envelope correlation coefficient of |ρ| ≤ 0.3 within the operational band, and |ρ| ≤ 0.06 in the higher frequency band. The proposed MIMO antenna emerges as an optimal solution for compact handheld devices and smartphones, effectively addressing a spectrum of applications, including 5G-IoT (fifth generation—Internet of things), WLAN (wireless local area network), and unlicensed UWB (ultra-wide band) technologies.
