Role of Omics and Its Integration into Modern-Day Technologies: Identification in Production of Industrially Relevant Bioproducts

摘要

The term “omics” is derived from a Greek word meaning “for every” or “all”. Omics technologies, encompasses genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and other -omics disciplines. It has revolutionized biological research by providing comprehensive insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying various biological processes. Genomics, as a fundamental omics discipline, enables the comprehensive study of an organism’s entire genetic blueprint. Through high-throughput sequencing technologies such as Next generation sequencing (NGS) and advanced bioinformatics analyses, genomics has facilitated the identification of genes responsible for specific traits and functions, including those relevant to industrial applications. Transcriptomics, on the other hand, focuses on the profiling of gene expression patterns, allowing us to understand how genes are regulated and orchestrated within a cell or organism. While Proteomics and Metabolomics complements genomics and transcriptomics by providing insights into the dynamic nature of proteins and small molecules within a biological system. Proteomics enables the identification and characterization of proteins involved in key metabolic pathways and production of bioproducts, and highlights their structure, function, and interactions. Metabolomics, on the other hand, offers a comprehensive snapshot of the metabolites present in a biological system, facilitating the discovery of novel pathways, biomarkers, and potential targets for bioproduction optimization. In this chapter we are going to see, how omics technologies help us in identification, characterization, and production of the bioproduct.
