The Role of microRNA in Stress Signaling and Adaptive Response in Plants
摘要
In the sphere of agriculture, the profound challenge of ensuring sustainable food production, is vital for our very survival, remains front and center. Crop productivity, essential for feeding the world’s population, is consistently threatened by a range of environmental stressors, both abiotic and biotic. However, the study of sustainable agriculture, particularly through the lens of microRNA research, offers a promising avenue for enhancing agricultural practices. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), small noncoding RNA molecules, serve as pivotal regulators in modulating gene expression, providing valuable insights into the intricate molecular mechanisms underlying plant responses to abiotic stressors. Plants have evolved sophisticated adaptive mechanisms to cope with adverse environmental conditions such as drought, high temperatures, cold, salinity, and nutrient scarcity. In this context, miRNAs emerge as essential contributors, playing a central role in alleviating the deleterious effects of these environmental stresses on plant physiology and molecular processes. Furthermore, miRNAs play a significant role in enhancing plant defenses against biotic stress, thereby fortifying resistance to pathogens. Comprehending these mechanisms enables researchers to harness the potential of microRNAs (miRNAs) for enhancing crop resilience and sustainability in agriculture. This chapter provides a thorough examination of miRNA biogenesis, regulation, and their involvement in shaping plant responses to environmental stress. Various miRNAs have been recognized as pivotal regulators influencing genes in plants and crops, as well as impacting transcription factors and stress response pathways. By manipulating these miRNAs, researchers aim to strengthen crops against challenging conditions and ensure stable yields in adverse circumstances. With molecular insights into miRNAs, we are better prepared to navigate a time marked by unpredictable climate patterns and increasing food demands. This chapter directs readers’ attention to the promising potential of microRNAs (miRNAs) in enhancing plants’ resilience to environmental stresses, thereby revolutionizing agricultural practices amid uncertainties in climate conditions.
