Dissolution of Titanium Carbide in Nanomodified Titanium Melt During Laser Surfacing

A previously constructed mathematical model of the dissolution of titanium carbide inclusions in a titanium melt containing nano-sized refractory particles is used here to calculate the dissolution of a titanium carbide hardening phase taking into account typical conditions of laser surfacing. It is shown that the main condition for maintaining the hardening effect is not exceeding the melting temperature of titanium carbide, because the time of exposure to the beam under typical treatment conditions is insufficient to completely dissolve the inclusions in the process of diffusion of carbon from the composition of inclusion. Recommended surfacing modes are the laser power density less than 1.5·108 W/m2 and the beam speed more than 0.01 m/s.
