Natural Hazards Triggering Technological Accidents (NATECH) and Future Perspectives

Natural Hazards Triggering Technological (Natech) Accidents are relatively rare. However, if they occur, the scale can be catastrophic, and the impact on the environment and economy can be enormous. In this research, the recognition and research progress of Natech accidents worldwide are reviewed, and regional differences in Europe, Asia, and the United States of America (the US) are compared. Europe is the leading region in Natech accidents research. Less research has been conducted in Asia and the US. Natech accidents have been recognized in Europe, and research has been conducted steadily. In addition, European countries have implemented common safety management measures and policies against Natech accidents. In contrast, each Asian country takes separate measures, and recognition and research progress vary. The US’ approach toward Natech accidents differs from that of Europe and Asia; that is, it focuses on responding to Natech accidents rather than preventing them. After reviewing these differences, future perspectives of the Natech approach are discussed.
