Metagenomics in the Census of Microbial Diversity

摘要

Metagenomics, a powerful tool in the realm of microbial ecology, facilitates the analysis of genetic material directly obtained from environmental samples, devoid of the necessity for culturing or isolating individual microorganisms. This approach provides a more complete picture of microbial communities present in different environments, including their functional potential and interactions. Integrative analysis of samples using multiple sequencing technologies enables researchers to compare microbial diversity at various levels. Thus, it is evident that the use of metagenomics is crucial in conducting an accurate and comprehensive census of microbial diversity. The significance of comprehending the structure and functions of the human microbiome can be ascribed to the involvement of the microorganisms in human well-being. Recent investigations elucidate associations between a specific composition of the microbiome and an extensive range of illnesses, encompassing autoimmune diseases, obesity, and even psychiatric disorders. The Microbiome Project started in 2008 and is intended to survey microbial communities in five major regions of the human body: the gut, respiratory system, mouth, skin, and vagina. Similarly, microbiome studies are being initiated to help identify microbial communities in the human body, and how they contribute to human health or disease.
