Overview on Multi-omics Research in Microbiome Analysis

摘要

Metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, metaproteomics, and metabolomics are four major omics (multi-omics) methodologies employed in the study of the interactions, composition, and function of microbial communities. Metagenomics is the investigation of a microbial community’s genomes, or all of the DNA that is present in a community. This can be used to identify the different organisms that are present and to get a sense of their genetic diversity. Metatranscriptomics is the study of the transcriptome of a microbial assembly, i.e. the set of all RNA transcripts present in a community. This can be used to identify the genes that are being expressed by the different organisms and to get a sense of their functional activity. The study of a microbial community’s proteome is called metaproteomics, i.e. the set of all proteins present. This can be used to identify the proteins that are being produced by the different organisms and to get a sense of their functional activity. Metabolomics is the study of the metabolome of a microbial community, i.e. the set of all small molecules present in an assembly. This can be used to identify the metabolites that are being produced and absorbed by the different organisms and to get an idea of their metabolic interactions. The multi-omics methods may be employed together to provide a thorough comprehension of microbial communities. By combining information about the genomes, genes, proteins, and metabolites of the different organisms in a community, it is possible to get a detailed image of their composition, function, and interactions. Overall, this interdisciplinary study explores multi-omics analysis to unlock the microbiome’s potential for innovative healthcare applications.
