Food Processing Technology with Future Impacts, Challenge, and Policy for Sustainable Bioeconomy

The food systems consist of the global bioeconomy, focused on knowledge-based innovation and transformation of production systems leading to sustainable economic development. In the past years, more than 50 countries globally accepted and adopted bioeconomic policies and strategies and considered the constraints related to climate, land, water, and energy. In 2019, India’s bioeconomy was worth USD 62.5 billion. This benefits the bioeconomy and contributes to creating more green, eco-friendly, and ecological techniques of the production process that contribute to achieving sustainable development goals. Swachh Bharat, Swasth Bharat, Make in India, Startup India, and Digital India are some of the influential initiatives aimed at boosting new research, enabling individuals, constructing world-class infrastructure, and promoting public-private partnership (PPP) models across all sectors, such as agriculture, industry, healthcare, and the environment. Bioeconomy helps transform rural environments, generating income and employment opportunities. Food waste accounts for 1.3 billion tons globally, one-third of the total annual food production, and is expected to rise to 138 million tons by 2025. The UN sustainable development goals have aimed to reduce 50% of food waste by 2030. This will substantially contribute to transforming from a linear to a more circular economy.
