Apathy in Dementia

Apathy, a syndrome characterized by a lack of initiative, interest, and emotional expression, is common in people with dementia. It has significant implications for individuals with dementia and their caregivers, as it can affect treatment adherence and complicate the management of other conditions in dementia. Nevertheless, it is often under-recognized or misidentified by others as depression or being lazy. With an increasing understanding of apathy and growing evidence of potential treatments, effective management strategies are available to enhance motivation, stimulate engagement, and address the needs of both the individual and the caregiver.
