Updating the Anatomical Understanding of Carpal Tunnel Using State-of-the-Art Imaging Techniques

摘要

Carpal tunnel anatomy has been extensively studied using a variety of imaging modalities. In recent years, technological advances have revolutionised the field, allowing for a more accurate and detailed understanding. Plain radiography and computed tomography (CT) provide information on the bony structures of the carpal tunnel, including the carpal bones and their anatomical relationship. Ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are techniques that allow assessment of the soft tissues within the carpal tunnel. MRI provides excellent visualisation of tendons, ligaments, and nerves, which facilitates the detection of injuries and the assessment of median nerve compression. On the other hand, ultrasound is gaining popularity due to its lower cost and speed of examination, and to the fact that it has similar diagnostic criteria to MRI. Together, these imaging modalities have significantly improved the study of carpal tunnel anatomy, leading to more accurate diagnoses and better treatment planning.
