摘要

Snow trouts, pristine and resilient cold-water fish species, are members of the distinguished Cyprinidae family, nestled within the subfamily Schizothoracinae. There are 62 recognized species of the genus Schizothorax under the family Cyprinidae worldwide. Among the lush green slopes and crystalline streams of the Himalayan and sub-Himalayan regions, we encounter a remarkable array of 28 indigenous snow trout species, each with its own unique charm. Within the emerald of Kashmir’s natural bounty, five indigenous snow trout species have made their home which include, Schizothorax curvifrons (Satter gad), Schizothorax niger (Ael gaad), Schizothorax plagiostomus (Khont), Schizothorax esocinus (Chirru), and Schizothorax labiatus (chhush). These Snow touts are mainly phytophagous/herbivorous and often found feeding on algae attached on stones. Snow trout are seasonal spawners. They spawn once in a year in Kashmir region however, in Nepal the fishes are found spawning twice. Although the fish can be raised artificially, alevin’s hatching rate and mortality remain high. In the realm of commercial culture, the elusive snow trout remains an enigma, with no established technology to facilitate its mass production. The reduction of snow trout species in the Himalayan region is a complicated issue with several proximate causes. This being the crucial moment, and it’s time to come up with a comprehensive set of actions to protect these iconic fishes. To prevent any further decrease in their numbers and preserve these valuable fish resources, we need to safeguard and restore their natural habitats and create new and creative conservation plans.
