The coldwater fisheries resources in India, particularly in the Himalayan and Western Ghats regions, play a vital role in the country’s aquatic biodiversity and offer significant potential for economic development and food security. India’s coldwater fisheries encompass upland rivers, streams, natural lakes at various altitudes, and reservoirs, creating a diverse network across the Himalayan and Western Ghats regions. These water bodies sustain a substantial population of both indigenous and exotic fish species, categorized as cultivable and non-cultivable. The varied fish species in these mountain water bodies present considerable opportunities for income generation in rural areas. Fishing activities can significantly contribute to livelihoods, especially in communities residing in these regions. Fish stands out as a valuable source of animal protein and essential nutrients, recognized for being a cost-effective, high-quality, balanced, and easily digestible protein source. Fish is abundant in crucial amino acids, minerals, and trace elements and boasts a low-fat composition. Coldwater fish, with their elevated polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) content, contribute significantly to nutritional value. These fatty acids are renowned for their preventive and therapeutic effects on cardiovascular ailments, potentially addressing protein deficiency and malnutrition. Due to its nutritional abundance, fish, especially those sourced from colder regions, can significantly support in addressing protein deficiency and malnutrition, thus enhancing overall health and wellness.
