Nutritional Intervention for Inland Coldwater Aquaculture Practices in Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) Region

The Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH), a crucial geo-ecological resource, serves as the origin for ten major river basins and spans a vast area exceeding 4.2 million square kilometers. On a global scale, aquaculture emerges as one of the rapidly expanding sectors in food production, with coldwater fish species being particularly important in various regions worldwide. These fish are a vital protein source for mountain communities, and there is an immediate need for international organizations to support the development of coldwater fisheries. Nutrition plays a crucial role in fish production, significantly influencing the success of aquaculture endeavors. The key to achieving prosperous and sustainable aquaculture lies in the provision of feeds that are not only nutritionally balanced but also environmentally responsible and economically viable. Unfortunately, there is a scarcity of literature addressing the specific nutritional requirements of coldwater fisheries. To optimize fish productivity, it is imperative to design tailored and effective diets that cater to the varied nutritional needs of coldwater fish species. This chapter provides comprehensive information on the protein, amino acid (AA), lipid, fatty acid, vitamin, and mineral requirements of coldwater fishes, offering valuable insights to advance the aquaculture practices for these species.
