Yunnan, located in Southeast China, is known for its ethnic diversity, mountainous terrain, and uneven economic development, all of which present unique challenges in addressing the healthcare needs of its aging population, particularly in underdeveloped rural areas. These regions struggle with limited infrastructure, geographical isolation, and cultural diversity, all of which hinder access to quality health services for older adults. This chapter examines the current state of healthcare systems and services for the elderly in rural Yunnan by evaluating public health services, medical care, and both family-based and community-based care models. Drawing on recent policy developments, existing literature, and empirical findings from surveys and relevant research, the chapter identifies key gaps in the provision of health and elderly care services, including issues related to access, quality, and integration of services. In particular, the chapter explores how traditional family-based care, which has historically dominated rural Yunnan, is being supplemented by community initiatives to address the growing demand for elderly care. The chapter also discusses policy measures aimed at improving healthcare delivery and suggests culturally appropriate and sustainable solutions for elderly care in rural areas. These insights aim to offer valuable recommendations for policy and healthcare practices to support aging populations in Yunnan and similar regions in the Asia-Pacific.
