Feasibility Analysis of Mega Tunnel in Himalayan Region
摘要
The extent of the underground structure is limited to the transportation of goods and traffic however conceptually utilized to store automobiles and military equipment. Mega Tunnel proves an efficient infrastructure at large scale and defined as a tunnel exceeding 10 m in diameter. Despite the need and importance of the Mega Tunnel as a sustainable traffic tool, it is crucially affected by its face stability due to its larger size. This issue even gets more critical in challenging geological conditions like the Himalayan mountains. The belt of the great Himalayas has always attracted researchers due to orogeny and distinctive features, and the face stability of Mega Tunnels in this region remained unclear because of its dominance. While Mechanized tunnelling offers a viable solution for urban areas, previous study indicates that it is not encouraging for the Himalayan region. This research proposes tunnelling using an EPB TBM in order to determine the feasibility of the Mega Tunnel in this area. Data was collected from the ongoing project construction site in lesser Himalayan to determine the actual geology condition. The circular and horseshoe shape, having an equivalent area, were simulated in MIDAS GTS NX. This study concludes that the extended arch radius of Horse-shoe tunnel may with-stand in weak rock. Construction sequence, quick support installation considerably affects the face stability. EPB pressures offered by the machine avoids jamming/blocking of TBM. This research helps with the planning and execution of numerous infrastructure projects in the Himalayan geology for the benefit of the country.
