Comparative Study of Different Methods of Estimation of Liquefaction

This paper presents a comparative study of different methods to estimate liquefiable depth using empirical relations with in-situ data. Soil parameters are taken from four different locations near Patna City, Bihar. Soil is from these locations are predominantly SM-SC type sandwiched with intermediate clay (CI) with silt. Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) as 0.24 and 0.36 g is considered. Each location is evaluated by using IS 1893:2016 code, China GB 50011:2010 code, Boulinger–Idriss 2014, Japanese Bridge Code Method. These methods are based on Standard Penetration Test (SPT N-Value). Three methods IS 1893:2016 code, Boulinger–Idriss 2014, Japanese Bridge Code Method is liquefiable depth in terms of Factor of safety (FOS). FOS is the ratio of cyclic resistance ratio (CRR) and Cyclic Stress Ratio (CSR). If FOS is < 1, soil will be liquifiable and vice versa. China GB 50011:2010 shows liquefiable depth in terms Liquefaction Potential Index (LPI). Higher LPI value means higher chances of liquefaction. To compare all methods, FOS is converted into LPI using Iwasaki Method and plotted the graph between LPI and Depth. Japanese Bridge Code method shows higher conservative results in case of non-cohesive soil. But if C–ϕ soil occurs at initial 5–10 m, then IS 1893:2016 and Japanese Bridge Code shows comparable results. As per soil condition used for this study Boulinger–Idriss 2014 method founds suitable among all methods.
