Study on Removal of Copper and Chromium from Contaminated Clayey Soil by Electrokinetic Remediation Technique
摘要
The remediation of contaminated clayey soils, particularly those contaminated with heavy metals (HMs), is a significant environmental challenge. This study focused on assessing the efficiency of integrating the electrokinetic (EK) process with Ammonium Citrate (AC) as a chelating agent for the remediation of soils contaminated with Copper (Cu) and Chromium (Cr) and examining the influence of pH control on the remediation process. The EK remediation of Copper and Chromium-contaminated field soil without enhancement was found to be ineffective, mainly due to the rise in pH near the cathode. This emphasises the significance of utilising enhancement agents to enhance the efficiency of the electrokinetic process. AC was chosen as a chelating agent due to its non-hazardous nature to both human health and the environment. In the case of copper-contaminated soil, electrokinetic remediation using a 0.1 M AC solution demonstrated a significantly higher removal efficiency 53.78% compared to treatment with tap water 5.26%, and chromium-contaminated soil showed removal efficiency of 36.47 and 3.68% with tap water. These findings suggest that the inclusion of AC improves the effectiveness of Cu and Cr removal. Moreover, it was noted that augmenting the concentration of the ammonium citrate solution resulted in even higher removal efficiency, indicating the possibility for further optimization.
