How Small and Medium Enterprises Easily Create World Firsts?

This chapter discusses small and medium enterprises and patent strategies. When starting a new business, not only for small and medium enterprises but also for startups or large corporations, it is common to start with as small a unit as possible with mobility. In that sense, this chapter is not limited to small and medium enterprises but considers the patent strategy of startups of new technology. Chapter 2 explained the idea of building a strong patent group and strengthening it by issuing many patents. However, issuing many patents can be costly and difficult. Therefore, how to effectively and surely secure individual patents and how to connect a limited number of patents to productization have become important topics. In this chapter, I introduce six cases in which collaboration between AIST and small and medium enterprises and patents occurred. Finally, I would like to make specific proposals based on the results of collaboration and other examples.
