Virus–Vector Interactions and Transmission

Plant viruses cause significant economic losses in agriculture by affecting crop yield and quality. The transmission of these viruses often relies on vector organisms, such as insects, nematodes, and fungi, which play a pivotal role in disseminating pathogens among plants. The two main factors contributing to the spread of an epidemic, host-vector contact rate and vector migration rate, have been linked to link management. The majority of plant viruses rely on an insect vector for transmission and acquisition, making insects the most significant vectors for plant viruses. The transmission of plant viruses via insect vectors occurs through non-circulative, semi-persistent, and circulative modes of interaction. Unraveling the complexities of plant virus-vector interactions and transmission is paramount for developing sustainable and integrated management strategies to control viral diseases in agriculture and ensure global food security. This comprehensive chapter explores the mechanisms underlying plant virus-vector interactions and transmission. We begin by examining the diversity of vectors involved in the transmission of plant viruses and their specific roles in the viral life cycle and further we delve into the molecular aspects of plant virus-vector interactions and transmission.
