Chapters 4 – 10 discussed deep-buried tunnel problems with the assumption that the upper and lower boundaries as well as the left and right boundaries far away from the tunnel are located at infinite distance. Due to the high in-situ stress, the gravity of surrounding rock can be neglected, and the in-situ stress field distribution before excavation can be achieved by applying a uniform surface force at the infinite boundaries. The deep-buried tunnel problems can be simplified as cavity problems in an infinite domain, which belong to the single-connected domain problem. However, when the tunnel depth is shallow, the effect of the ground surface boundary on the stress and displacement around the tunnel cannot be ignored. This situation is 3red to shallow-buried tunnel in this book. As the in-situ stress is generally small in shallow-buried tunnels, the influence of the gravity of the excavated surrounding rock needs to be considered. Even for a single tunnel, the shallow-buried problem can only be simplified as a semi-infinite domain problem, which belongs to double-connected domain problem. Therefore, the solution of shallow-buried tunnel problems will be much more complex than that of deep-buried tunnel problems.
