Assessing the Effectiveness of the ELSA App for English Language Learning of Indian Native Speakers

The world has become one due to technological advancement, and English as a language has influenced the global arena, making English to earn the status of universal language. It becomes imperative for the glocal (global + local) environment of the skilled/unskilled individuals to become adept in English language and develop effective communication skills, predominantly, for the people in countries like India where English functions primarily as a second/third language. The learning of language has become convenient and handy through mobile apps which arose as a powerful tool for English language learning, proposing interactive features and exercises to improve communication skills. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the level of success of the ELSA mobile app in augmenting the communication skills of native L2/L3 speakers in India. The paper evaluates the various features, comprising personalized and user feedback, surveys to study the impact of the ELSA App on various characteristics of communication, such as speaking fluency, pronunciation accuracy, listening comprehension, and overall language proficiency. The paper aims to supplement with valuable understandings into the efficiency and prospects of the ELSA app as a proficient Mobile App Language Learning (MALL) for English language learning among Indian native speakers. The recommendations given in the paper considering the need of the Indian native user may increase its viability as a product like working on making the pronunciation on neutral accent (considering Indian natives) than American. The study may serve as a pertinent report to language learners, educationalists, and app creators, supporting in the enhancement and optimization of language learning resources and strategies for native Indian English speakers.
