Unveiling Nature’s Treasures: Exploring Bioactive Compounds from Algae for Extraction, Refinement, and Diverse Applications

Exploring bioactive compounds from algae has emerged as a captivating research focus in recent years. Studies have demonstrated that algae harbor a reservoir of intrinsic natural substances encompassing pigments, polyphenols, terpenes, polysaccharides, vitamins, and other bioactive entities, each bestowing distinctive physiological properties and multiple applications. Pigments, recognized for their antioxidative potency, confer cellular protection against oxidative stress and inflammation, showcasing their potential as therapeutic agents. Compounds like polyphenols and flavonoids have gained scientific attention due to their potential contributions to treating cardiovascular health, cognitive well-being, and other major diseases. Advancements in extraction methodologies, such as supercritical fluid extraction and enzyme-assisted extraction, have been harnessed to unlock these bioactive compounds from algae. Subsequent refinement endeavors, encompassing chromatographic techniques and filtration, ensure the attainment of high-purity compounds. These bioactive compounds have myriad applications in nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, food and cosmetics, biofuels, animal feed, agrochemicals, and environmental remediation. These compounds exhibit the potential to promote overall well-being, propelling advancements in medical research with other diverse applications. Despite the promising effects, challenges persist, necessitating sustainable extraction practices and new methods for refining these bioactives and evaluating their potential for diverse applications. In addition to evaluating our existing knowledge, we distinctly emphasize the latest advancements in extraction, purification, and refinement methodologies. Exploration of bioactive compounds using eco-friendly and/or cost-effective extraction techniques and innovative purification strategies for versatile applications holds the key to a harmonious future where algal bioactive compounds harmonize health, industry, and the environment.
