Pollutants from Agricultural Activities in the Global South

Agricultural activities in the Global South contribute significantly to both point source pollutants and non-point source (NPS) pollutants, which have profound implications for environmental quality and human health. This chapter examines these pollutants’ sources, characteristics, and impacts, highlighting key challenges and potential mitigation strategies. Point source pollutants, often originating from concentrated animal feeding operations, include nutrient-rich runoff and pathogens that can contaminate water bodies, leading to eutrophication and waterborne diseases. Non-point source pollutants, primarily associated with pesticide and fertiliser use, result in soil and water contamination, threatening ecosystems and groundwater resources. The Global South faces unique challenges in managing these pollutants due to limited resources, knowledge gaps, and competing socio-economic priorities. However, adopting sustainable agricultural practices, enhancing regulatory frameworks, and promoting farmer education and awareness can help mitigate the adverse effects of agricultural pollutants in the Global South, safeguarding both the environment and public health. Collaborative efforts among governments, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and international agencies are essential to address these complex issues effectively.
