DSD: A Gynecologist’s Perspective

Disorders of sexual differentiation (DSD) is a complex entity, involving many superspecialists. Although the goal of treatment is to assign the proper sex to the unfortunate patient, the path to achieve may be very complex and difficult. Arriving at the diagnosis may be extremely easy as in Turner’s syndrome or may be extremely complicated in others. The process involves gynecologists, pediatricians, pediatric surgeons, endocrinologists, genetic experts making it a cauldron of different views. Complicating it further unlike other medical conditions, patients own psychological inclination has an important role to play bringing in the psychiatrist, psychoanalyst. Presented herewith DSD from a gynecologist’s perspective and highlighted are some of the interesting and rarer cases. Ovarian transplant, a new treatment modality for Turner’s syndrome, along with a novel technique of vaginoplasty developing a normal vagina is presented. Along with that, the latest research on progenitor cell and translational genomes in the vaginoplasty is also discussed.
