India is an developing country characterised by a predominantly rural population that relies on agriculture for their livelihood. Rice farming is a widely used way of obtaining food. According to reports, around 46 million hectares of land in India were cultivated with rice by the end of fiscal year 2022. India, with a rice production of around 129 million metric tonnes in fiscal year 2022, now holds the second position globally in terms of rice production. However, this practice results in a substantial quantity of organic waste, specifically rice straw, a portion of which is used as animal feed, while the remainder is typically incinerated by local farmers. Improperly burning rice straw not only releases crucial soil microorganisms but also emits primary and secondary pollutants such as CO, SOX, NOX, NH3, and CO2. Consequently, this practice has detrimental impacts on both soil fertility and the ecosystem. This requires the ecologically conscientious and sustainable management of abandoned paddy straw or rice straw. This chapter focuses on several methodologies for transforming wasted paddy straw into products that possess enhanced value.
