Habitat specificity of indigenous small fish species is a critical aspect of their ecological niche and survival strategies within aquatic ecosystems. Indigenous small fish (ISF) exhibits a remarkable degree of adaptation to specific habitats, influenced by factors such as water quality, substrate composition, vegetation cover, and hydrological patterns. This chapter explores the significance of habitat specificity in the context of indigenous small fish, emphasizing its implications for their distribution, reproductive success, and overall ecological role. These fish species often display a high degree of fidelity to particular habitats, ranging from river channels and floodplains to wetlands and backwaters. This specificity is closely tied to their life history traits, including spawning behaviours, feeding preferences, and sensitivity to environmental conditions.
