Prospects of Intensive Farming of Indigenous Small-Fish Species in Recirculating Aquaculture System

In certain regions of the world, indigenous small fish (ISFs) aquaculture is being recognized as a promising way to improve livelihoods, income, and nutritional security in rural areas. One effective method to enhance ISFs farming is through polyculture techniques, which improve efficiency and sustainability. To tap the full potential of the farming, ongoing efforts are crucial, including refining breeding methods, ensuring access to quality seeds, improving feeding practices, understanding essential nutrient biochemistry of ISFs, and promoting best aquaculture approaches for higher productivity. In the face of challenges like land and water scarcity, embracing sustainable aquaculture technologies such as recirculating systems can boost the productivity. Moreover, the concept of turning “waste to wealth” offers a promising way to reduce the feed, land, and water resource requirement in ISF farming. This chapter explores the exciting possibilities and advantages of intensive ISF farming within the framework of recirculating aquaculture technology.
