Food Situation in the Social Changes of the Late Period of Joseon
摘要
The influence of social changes on Korean food and nutritional status of Koreans during the late period of the Joseon kingdom (1800–1910) is analyzed by examining old literature and records of Westerners who visited Korea during this time. The late Joseon era can be designated as the poorest and most miserable period of Korean history. Korea’s people suffered from corrupt, incompetent government and social disturbance. Driving forces committed to reforming Korean society during this time were Silhak (Practical Learning), introduction of the Catholic church, and the Donghak movement. Food-related literature written during this period described lives of the upper classes (Yangban), paying little attention to the poor majority’s experiences. This chapter addresses food availability and habits of the Korean people as observed by Westerners who visited Korea.
