摘要

John von Neumann introduced Cellular Automata (CA) along with his various other computational tools. However, the proposed 29-state CA involves complexity to apply them in physical and biological systems. Later on, Stephan Wolfram’s proposed 3-neighbourhood 1D CA, specifically termed as elementary cellular automata (ECA), provides a more convenient way of modelling. It provides features like simplicity, modularity, homogenity, scalability, dynamic updation with local transition rules, cost-effective implementation, and so on. Therefore, a large number of researchers/enthusiasts of this domain concentrated on ECA to exploit its versatility. CAs are considered for their universal computational capacity and applicability in a wide range of discrete dynamical systems. Thereby, CA tools are well employed in water/hydroinformatics. CAs have found extensive applications in systems of hydropower generation control unit, flood control, land-use/cover change, water flow, prediction and regulation of water demand/supply, etc. This chapter throws light on modern water informatics applications extensively addressed through CA. The applications are extensively discussed in the context of various CA constructions as well as parameters.
