Plant Functional Traits in Crop Breeding: Advancement and Challenges
摘要
Plant functional traits have emerged as crucial factors in crop breeding, offering a pathway to address the multifaceted challenges facing agriculture today. These traits, encompassing features like leaf morphology, root architecture, and physiological attributes, govern how plants interact with their environment and influence their performance in various ecological contexts. One of the paramount advantages of integrating plant functional traits into crop breeding lies in optimizing resource utilization. Recent advancements have facilitated the incorporation of plant functional traits into breeding programs. High-throughput phenotyping technologies enable efficient measurement of these traits on a large scale, enhancing selection processes. Trait stacking, combining multiple functional traits within a single variety, optimizes performance across diverse environments, enhancing adaptability and resilience. Plant functional traits are increasingly integrated into precision agriculture practices, enabling farmers to tailor crop management strategies based on trait data, thereby optimizing resource allocation and improving yields. While the promise of plant functional traits is substantial, challenges persist. Complex interactions between traits and environmental variability make accurate trait predictions challenging. Novel crop varieties developed with modified traits may face consumer resistance, necessitating effective communication and education. Smaller breeding programs with limited resources may struggle to access advanced technologies. Addressing these challenges demands collaboration among scientists, breeders, policymakers, and stakeholders. This chapter explores the significance of plant functional traits in crop breeding, recent advancements, and the challenges that researchers and breeders face in integrating these traits into breeding programs.
