Counting and estimating the population statuses of all pests or their natural enemies in an ecosystem, such as a farm, orchard, jungle, or pasture, is typically impractical. Thus, developing an accurate and cost-effective sampling program from the natural population is crucial for the implementation of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs. The sampling program involves counting the insect population in sample units extracted from the sample universe using appropriate sampling techniques to estimate pest population density. This program serves as a methodical procedure that employs sampling techniques to gather a sufficient number of sample units and assess the pest population status. It is imperative for the sampling program to be representative of the natural population while minimizing effort. To execute a successful sampling program, determining the number of samples, their distribution, and size is essential for estimating the pest population status accurately. This chapter outlines key concepts required to plan an effective sampling program for precise estimation of pest or other animal population statuses. The primary objectives of pest population sampling include estimating population density and classifying pest status to facilitate decision-making. In the latter objective, sampling costs are reduced by gathering samples in different classes and making decisions after each class, assessing the need for additional samples to arrive at a correct decision. The sampling program explores sequential sampling plans based on knowledge of sample data variance, particularly focusing on mean densities around critical levels such as the Economic Injury Level (EIL) and Economic Threshold (ET). Additional information on specific sampling techniques, considerations for different ecosystems, and practical examples are included to enhance the chapter’s depth and applicability.
