Antiallergic Implications of Curcumin During COVID-19: Current Status and Perspectives

COVID-19 has impacted almost all nooks and corners of the globe. Initially, it was thought to cause respiratory ailments. However, the virions have been detected in several organs to fuel multiorgan failure. The virus triggers intense allergic reactions to impose adverse impacts on human health. Hence, antiallergic compounds have potential interest to treat COVID-19 morbidity. Curcumin is a well-documented phytochemical having numerous health benefits with antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, and antimicrobial activities. In addition, recent investigations have suggested the potential implications of curcumin against allergic and inflammatory reactions triggered by SARS-CoV-2 virions. Curcumin modulates the release of allergic inflammatory mediators such as histamine, IgE, and inflammatory cytokines. Such activities of the compound can help subvert oxidative stress, cytokine storm, and associated physiological malfunctions of the disease. Nonetheless, further investigations are needed to standardize the doses of the compound for the clinical trials and subsequent uses by the global population for its antiallergic and anti-inflammatory potentials against SARS-CoV-2.
