Updates on Rohingya Repatriation to Myanmar: The Tale of a Never-Ending Process

The Rohingyas of Myanmar have suffered from persecution and discrimination virtually from the moment Myanmar gained independence in 1948. Over several distinct waves of migration, displaced Rohingyas fled into neighboring countries, most significantly Bangladesh. Though there have been numerous attempts to repatriate these Rohingya refugees, who now number above one million, to date very little success has been achieved. We provide an overview of the four largest and most distinct waves of Rohingya migration to Bangladesh, before moving to a discussion and analysis of the various repatriation initiatives attempted. These initiatives broadly fall under two categories: first, attempts under the Suu Kyi Government; and second, attempts under the current military junta, which are continuing today. Based on the recent repatriation initiative taken by China, we conclude with cautious optimism and exhortations for responsible conduct on the part of Myanmar, Bangladesh, and the global community in continuing to negotiate the complex issue of Rohingya repatriation.
