Learning Module for Visually-Challenged Children in the Post-covid World

This study aims to develop a smart learning module for visually-challenged children in the post-covid world to provide sufficient educational resources and in-person support. A thorough case study is conducted, followed by ethnographic research and empathy-based design techniques. A smart learning device—with a Braille-type face for visually-challenged children—is designed with accessibility and inclusivity in mind, incorporating features and functions that make it easier for the visually-challenged to access new information, connect with others, and learn together. The device uses advanced technology and is composed of two main parts, six Braille keys and a tactile representation of texts, which allows users to access and read information. This device is also integrated with a smartphone application that would be used by sighted teachers (or individual) to send and receive information, track the students’ progress and responses, and conduct virtual exams. Text-to-Braille and Braille-to-text conversion is done via the application to make it easier for both users. The proposed solution will not only help the visually-challenged children to cope with new learning methods but also provide a better learning experience.
