Remote Sensing Applications II: Climate Change Perspectives in Agriculture

This chapter concludes the book covering remote sensing applications with different analytical approaches for assessing the vulnerability and impacts of climate extremes such as riverbank erosion, flash floods, tropical cyclones, and drought. Different coping strategies, such as land suitability analysis, identifying renewable energy sources, microclimate characterization, climate risk assessment, and damage-based crop insurance models, are presented in this book. To perform the analysis, different remote sensing methods and analytical approaches were adopted. In riverbank erosion, flood, and drought vulnerability analysis, the multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) method with a fuzzy expert system was used. The same approach was used for land suitability analysis. To facilitate the analysis, different criteria indices, such as the normalized difference water index (NDWI), distance from the river, soil adjusted vegetation index (SAVI), land use and land cover (LULC), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), modified vegetation condition index (mVCI), disaster vegetation damage index (DVDI), and standardized precipitation index (SPI), were considered. An inventory of knowledge from spatially variable communities was also presented as a source of indigenous knowledge for mitigating climate change impacts. These combined approaches may help policy-makers and researchers with subsequent studies related to the effects of climate change and the impact on the development of proper adaptation policies.
