Starting from the Opium War in 1840, due to foreign invasion externally and warlord conflicts, the Taiping Rebellion and the Boxer Rebellion internally, the activities of economic and social production were on the verge of collapse. Years of wars greatly damaged productivity, leading to a depressed market, soaring prices and low incomes. Many farmers live in poverty with little food and clothing and struggle to survive.
