Industrial Corrosion Inhibitors: Food Waste as Ideal Substitutes

Numerous industrial processes such as pipeline construction for gas and oil transport, marine industries, chemical processing, acid descaling, and acid pickling use metallic materials as construction, especially mild steel material due to its high availability, physicochemical characteristics, and cost-effectiveness. On the other hand, this material can be easily damaged provoking economic and human damage during the cleaning process with the aggressive acidic medium. Firstly, research in the fields of science and engineering has been focused on the application of organic chemicals as corrosion inhibitors, but, recently, many kinds of research have paid attention to the application of food waste as ideal substitutes and eco-friendly corrosion inhibitors, replacing toxic corrosion inhibitors. This type of inhibitor involves both food waste management and industrial construction prevention. This chapter deals with the importance of Food waste valorization and its effective application as a corrosion inhibitor. It also presents the various extraction methods used and characterization techniques that confirm the constituted molecules that exist in the studied inhibitors. Moreover, the electrochemical and theoretical methods’ explanation was discussed in detail. Furthermore, the inhibition performance of Food waste was explained based on the metal type and the electrolytic solution used. Finally, considering the current research gaps, future directions are proposed.
