Mexico. An Enduring Quest for the Elusive Idea of National Identity and Unity

Following its independence from Spain in 1821, Mexico established the legal foundations for its national public education system. This chapter presents a brief historical account of the development of public education in the Mexico, an analysis of the country’s struggle to establish a fair society with respect to all groups represented in its population, and a discussion on the increased level of social tensions derived from the recent inclusion of morally debatable topics into the national curriculum.
