A dialect is a branch and variety of a language. The study of dialects is called dialectology. Dialects can be divided into geographical dialects and social dialects. Within dialectology, the study of geographical dialects has a long history while the study of social dialects has a comparatively short history and few achievements. The main research object of this book is geographical dialects; social dialects will briefly be touched upon.
