Between Arms Sales and Democracy Promotion: Poland-Myanmar Relations

Examines the vicissitudes of Polish-Burmese relations since the establishment of diplomatic relations. The lack of any noticeable improvement in bilateral relations during the 1990s and the 2000s was followed by some improvement in the 2010s when Poland supported political changes and extended development assistance for democracy promotion. Bilateral relations subsequently declined because of the Law and Justice (PiS) government’s disinterest in democracy promotion, the Rohingya crisis, the impact of the Covid pandemic, and the 2021 coup in Myanmar.
