摘要

Sugarcane, is a vital tropical C4 plant known for its sucrose storage capacity, plays a crucial role in global sugar and ethanol production. Despite its multifaceted applications, the sugarcane industry faces numerous challenges, which impact the final harvesting yield and quality. Traditional breeding methods prove inefficient due to sugarcane’s complexity and extended breeding cycles. Modern biotechnological approaches, particularly genetic engineering and molecular markers, offer unprecedented opportunities. These techniques enable precise genetic modifications, facilitating the development of superior sugarcane varieties. Molecular markers and genomic tools aid in identifying high-yield, stress-tolerant cultivars, enhancing selection processes. Additionally, advancements in bioinformatics, genomics, proteomics, and transcripteomic shed light on intricate gene-protein-metabolite relationships, vital for understanding stress responses. This chapter explores these innovations, showcasing their potential to address existing challenges and ensure a sustainable future for sugarcane production, thereby promoting global food security and sustainability.
