Basilar invagination (BI) is a kind of occipitocervical deformity caused by the upward displacement or invagination of the atlantoaxial or basilar region bone tissue around the foramen magnum into the cranial cavity, resulting in the narrowing of the foramen magnum, the reduction of the volume of the posterior cranial fossa, and the compression of the brainstem, ventral aspect of the rostral cervical spinal cord, cerebellum, lower cranial nerves, and peripheral blood vessels, giving rise to a spectrum of symptoms and signs.
