The Chinese have a predilection for history. “People naturally become more and more upright and honest by carefully handling their parents’ death and commemorating their long-deceased ancestors.” We believe that historical cultivation is conducive to the edification of the masses. Nevertheless, when we trace the origins of Chinese culture, we usually stop at the time of Confucius and Mencius, beyond which there were only myths and legends.
