Japan and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria

During the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Japan has made diplomatic efforts for the enhancement of the global health system in conjunction with the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (Global Fund). The Global Fund was established in January 2002 based on a statement by Japanese Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori who mentioned the importance of establishing new partnerships and international cooperation to fight against infectious diseases at the Kyushu-Okinawa G8 Summit in 2000. Since then, Japan has made diplomatic contributions to the development of the Global Fund. Given the significance of the Global Fund to the global health system, this chapter examines Japan’s contributions to the Global Fund since its inception to the present including the COVID-19 pandemic period.
